With the month of November welcoming the 7th edition of Rome’s International Film Festival, we are reminded that numerous spots in Rome have been and continue to be cinematically significant. Too many to name, we have picked three spots for cinephiles to visit.

Casa del Cinema

Largo Marcello Mastroianni, 1 – entrance at Piazzale del Brasile

Metro A to Spagna or Barberini

Buses: 490, 491, C3, 88, 95, 116

Nestled in the beautiful Villa Borghese, the history behind the Casa del Cinema goes back to 1833 when the house was purchased by the Italian noble family, the Borghese. Through its years, the building was turned from a farmhouse, to a battleground between Mazzini’s troops and the French, to a high class restaurant, and lastly to an event hall, all before being abandoned in the 1970s. Only in 2001, Roma Capitale began to fund a restoration of the house, leading to its official inauguration in 2004. Now, Casa del Cinema houses four screening rooms, a 200-seat outdoor cinema, a DVD-viewing room, a cafè, and a bookstore.

Hollywood – tutto sul Cinema:

Via di Monserrato, 107 – Campo de’ Fiori area

Mon – Sat 10am-7.30pm

Buses: 40, 46, 62, 64, tram 8

 06.6869197

Since 1983, Hollywood has been the go-to store for those looking for films and anything related to cinema. Its collection of films is vast; reaching as far back as silent movies, all the way up to current releases. The store’s large catalogue of films, posters, and rare photos makes it a great source for anyone studying or working in film, or for the cinema lovers looking to lose themselves in all things movie related. Marco, the store’s owner is all too happy to help any browsers, and with his expert knowledge of film at hand, you won’t leave disappointed.

Libreria del Cinema

Via dei Fienaroli, 31 – Trastevere area

Mon – Fri 2-10pm, Sat – Sun 6pm-12am

Buses: 8 tram, 23, 280, 271

Tel: 06.5817724

Opening a creative space in Trastevere dedicated to cinema was the brainchild of four friends in summer of 2004. Not only a space for lovers of cinema to meet, but Libreria del Cinema also holds conferences and video projections for the public. Operating for almost 10 years now, the Libreria offers its patrons CDs, DVDs, rare and used books, texts in original language, and reference books. Furthermore, there are always conferences and workshops scheduled, accepting all curious and cinema-minded people. You can also have a seat in the store and peruse the books while enjoying a coffee and pastry from the Libreria’s cafe’.

Sommarlek, 96 min., Sweden 1951, original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Ingmar Bergman, starring Maj-Britt Nilsson, Birger Malmsten and Alf Kjellin
Marie, a ballerina, is at the theatre when she is handed the diary of Erik, her first love, which takes her back to that unforgettable summer with all its memories. This, the third and last film made by Vigo, who died extremely young, is a perfect synthesis of the avant-garde and of social cinema, “between realism and aestheticism” as Truffaut was to write.

23/01/2015 21:00

Jeanne Moreau provides a breathtaking performance in this, possibly the best noir ever made by Truffaut (towards whom Kill Bill owes a huge debt…).

Ordet. The word – Cinema

ingresso libero

Ordet, Denmark, 1955, 124 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer, starring Henrik Malberg, Preben Lerdorff Rye and Brigitte Federspiel
Three brothers each have a different and original relationship with religion and one of them, a theology student, even believes himself to be the Messiah; but an unexpected tragedy changes the lives of all three. This movie, in itself one of the loftiest portrayals of religion on celluloid, has one of the most moving and overwhelming finales ever seen on screen.

Johnny Guitar – Cinema

admission free

USA, 1954, 110 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Nicholas Ray, starring Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden and Mercedes McCambridge
Johnny, a cowboy and guitar player, shows up in the bar run by Vienna, his former lover, and helps her to defend herself against a charge of sheltering a gang of bank robbers. A baroque and visionary Western rich in symbolism and with a splendid performance from the leading lady, this has become a fully-fledge cult movie for generations of cinema buffs.

Small change – Cinema

admission free

L’argent de poche, France, 1976, 104 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by François Truffaut, starring Nicole Felix, Chantal Mercier and Jean-François Stévenin
The stories, sentiments, problems and first loves of a group of young lads as they wait for the summer holidays to arrive, this touching choral movie has a grace and a sensitivity that strike a deep chord. A director who always showed a keen interest in the world of children, Truffaut here produced one of the finest films ever dedicated to childhood.

01/02/2015 21:00
The girl can’t help it – Cinema

ingresso libero

USA, 1956, 99 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Frank Tashlin, starring Tom Ewell, Jayne Mansfield and Edmond O’Brien
A former gangster who has become the boss of a leading musical company hires a publicity agent to launch his girl-friend as a singer. This, one of Tashlin’s most successful films and extremely rich in ironic gags, is buoyed up by performances from the very first rock stars, including Little Richard and Fats Domino.

03/02/2015 21:00
Day for Night – Cinema

admission free

La nuit américaine, France, Italy, 1973, 115 min., Italian version, directed by François Truffaut, starring Jacqueline Bisset, Jean-Pierre Léaud and Jean-Pierre Aumont
The private lives of a film crew’s members with their love stories, their clashes and their myriad daily setbacks, become entangled with one another on set in this moving and amusing tribute to the world of the cinema and its bizarre players. This was to become one of the director’s best-loved movies, winning an Academy Award for the Best Foreign Film.

04/02/2015 21:00
A king in New York – Cinema

admission free

United Kingdom, 1957, 105 min., Italian version, directed by Charles Chaplin, starring Charles Chaplin, Maxine Audley and Jerry Desmonde
Deposed in the course of a revolution, a European monarch is exiled to the United States, but he soon ends up in the net of the Commission for Anti-American Activities (as indeed happened to Chaplin himself in real life). In Truffaut’s view, this caustic satire, which so few people understood at the time, was the great director’s most personal film.

05/02/2015 21:00
Mississipi mermaid – Cinema

admission free

La sirène du Mississippi, France, Italy, 1969, 120 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by François Truffaut, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Catherine Deneuve and Michel Bouquet
Louis, a wealthy tobacco planter from the Ile de la Réunion, knows Julie only through correspondence. When the two finally meet, they soon wed, but the woman is not who she claims to be. The director’s beloved theme of amour fou, or blind love, turns into a noir in this film that has become a veritable cult movie.

06/02/2015 21:00
Shoot the pianist – Cinema

admission free

Tirez sur le pianiste, France, 1960, 92 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by François Truffaut, starring Charles Aznavour and Marie Dubois
Charlie, a pianist, is caught up in a settling of scores between gangsters and is forced to flee with his friend Lena, who knows many things about his past. This, the director’s second film, combines several different genres with enjoyable nonchalance, reflecting the almost anarchistic free spirit of the early Nouvelle Vague.

07/02/2015 21:00
L’Atlante – Cinema

admission free

France, 1934, 89 min., original version with Italian subtitles, directed by Jean Vigo, starring Jean Dasté, Dita Parlo and Michel Simon
The film explores the difficult life of two young newly-weds who choose to live together on a rickety barge, the Atalante, governed by old père Jules and a cabin boy. This, the third and last film made by Vigo, who died extremely young, is a perfect synthesis of the avant-garde and of social cinema, “between realism and aestheticism” as Truffaut was to write.

08/02/2015 21:00
Confidentially yours – Cinema

admission free

Vivement dimanche!, France, 1983, 111 min., Italian version, directed by François Truffaut, starring Fanny Ardant, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Jean-Pierre Kalfon
Julian is suspected of killing his wife’s lover, and when she too is killed, the police attempt to track him down. His feisty secretary takes care of unravelling the mystery. Truffaut’s last film is a noir tinged with pink, filmed at an impeccable pace and with a performance of unparalleled charm from Fanny Ardant.

One of the most important film events of the year, the Rome Film Fest celebrates the great stories told on the big screen and creates an opportunity for the public to engage in a dialogue about the role of cinema in society and our lives. For those
interested in expanding their knowledge of film and exploring diverse genres, styles and international directors the 10th edition of Rome Film Fest is place to be.

Roma Film Festival

For nine days, the building complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano will host screenings, exhibitions, onstage conversations, events, conferences, and panels. The 1,300 square metres of the avenue leading to the Cavea (an open-air theatre square) will become one of the largest red carpets in the world.
Produced by Fondazione Cinema per Roma, chaired by Piera Detassis and under the artistic direction of Antonio Monda, Rome Film Festival exudes quality and excellence. It aims to promote a deeper understanding of the various forms of expression relevant to cinema such as independent films, visual art, documentaries, research and experimentation. Presenting films that might otherwise have been penalized for distribution, the festival also makes an effort to draw new audiences.

Cinecittà Studios will be the only place in central and southern Italy offering the public the chance to become immersed in the 188-minute film, shot in Ultra Panavision 70mm format chosen by the Maestro for his latest work.

The movie’s extended version will be screened in the legendary Teatro 5 which – for the occasion – will be transformed by production designer Tonino Zera into a movie theatre for an audience of 888, with a curved, tiered structure to guarantee optimal visibility from every point, several flights of steps and a 21 x 8 meter mega screen designed to enhance the breadth, depth, definition and spectacular quality of the 70mm images.
At the entrance, a big structure representing the snowy landscape of the movie will welcome the viewers with clear references to the evocative film story.
Thanks to 01 Distribution, the Italian distribution company for the movie, screening of the 70mm version of the movie at Teatro 5 is scheduled till the 13 March, and will mark the opening of the Studios’ film review, “Cinecittà Winter Film Show,” an initiative launched by Cinecittà Studios and Cinecittà Shows Off to pay tribute to Quentin Tarantino and Sergio Leone, and that every year will offer premieres and retrospectives dedicated to big filmmakers.
Tarantino’s most celebrated hits will be joined (till the end of February) by a selection of westerns directed by Sergio Leone, a filmmaker who has always been a major reference point for the groundbreaking American filmmaker.

Auditorium Parco della Musica hosts the 11th edition of Festa del Cinema, Rome’s annual famed film festival. The building complex designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano will host screenings, exhibitions, celebrity appearances, debates, conferences, and panels, while the 1,300 square metres of the avenue leading to the Cavea (an open-air theatre square) becomes one of the largest red carpets in the world.

Rome Film Festival 2016

44 films make up the festival’s official selection (including Oliver Stone‘s Snowden, Andrzej Wajda‘s Powidoki, Stephen Frears‘s Florence Foster Jenkins and Werner Herzog ‘s Into the Inferno), and range from brand-new, genre, and Italian.

Motion picture American Pastoral, adapted from Philip Roth’s eponymous novel, is slated as the first event of the festival, but will be presented ten days in advance at Cinema Barberini on 3 Oct. Stars Ewan McGregor and Jennifer Connelly are expected to attend the premiere.

Films further on in the month include drama Captain Fantastic (starring Viggo Mortensen) whose plot follows a family forced to reintegrate into society after living in isolation for a decade; Nicholas Stoller and Doug Sweetland’s animated family film Storks; and Afterimage, director Andrzej Wajda’s biopic of avant-garde painter Władysław Strzemiński.

Rome Film Festival 2016

Look for separate film series dedicated to Tom Hanks and Valerio Zurlini, as well as a retrospective dedicated to American politics, with movies by Frank Capra, John Ford, and Steven Spielberg. A series called Close Encounters also promises conversations with prominent names in the film industry, including Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone. The auteur, whose films are known for their scathing critique of power and corruption, will discuss American politics on the even of the presidential elections. Talks with Hollywood royalty Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are on the bill, as well as conversations with Don DeLillo, Daniel Libeskind, David Mamet, Viggo Mortensen, Roberto Benigni and Jovanotti.

An homage to Italian film director Luigi Comencini comes in the form of an exhibition featuring 50 photographs taken by Comencini himself, and a screening of his cinematic masterpiece The Adventures of Pinocchio completes the tribute. In honor of the 10th anniversary of filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo’s death, the festival will show his film Queimada, starring Marlon Brando; and it also it marks L’Armata Brancaleone’s 50th anniversary with a screening of the Italian comedy.

Do you like beer, books and crime conundrums? If you’re seeking an international thrill this summer then look no further than the Krimi Festival of German Crime Fiction, designed and organised by publishing house Emons.

A film festival with a difference, Krimi is specialising not just in gialli (crime thrillers) but exclusively German crime thrillers at that. Get yourself down to the suitable setting of the 1930s Cinema Nuovo Sacher from 23 to 25 June for a selection of readings, film projections and discussions between the top Italian and German crime fiction authors, critics and journalists. The tone of the festival will be set by its opening screening of Wim Wenders’ 1977 film The American Friend, a whole 40 years after its original release.

As for the full official programme, the suspense is building with clues being guarded closely by organisers. However, what you can be sure of is a whole host of quality Italian and German actors and writers and gripping plotlines that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Sip an ice-cold artisan beer and munch on delicious food served by Campagna Amica while you mull over the evidence and channel your inner Sherlock Holmes.
